Mediocre service from hosting company?

I'm dealing with number of issues on the server, and this is one of them: http://www.aardvarkbusiness.net/chat/viewtopic.php?t=8915 . However, my host company is not very helpful, and they say that they'd need to charge for administration time if they answer my questions. Is this normal or this is just mediocre service?

Depends if you've got a maintainance contract for the server. If not then you'll end up paying for their time to look into it.

Ok, you've seen my questions. Do you think that tech supports should be able to answer these questions or these are questions only senior system administrators can answer, in other words, I should be paying a hefty fee to get answers to these questions?

In that case you have no server administration time included by default - I think. Check the site.

Tomcat might not be a standard install - you're running Plesk, I can't remember if Tomcat is fully supported through Plesk at the moment.

Check the Plesk docs to see if you should contact Plesk or go through SM when you encounter problems. Also try and work out if it's a problem with one of your scripts.

I specifically asked about this. I asked if they support Tomcat and their customers were able to run Tomcat without any problem before I signed up. Given my experience with them, they basically lied, and this is one of several reasons why I'm not happy with them.

TP or Plesk?

Have you tried running no Tomcat or HTTP stuff at all and seeing what happens? Also try running a simple hello world script every few min, then see what happens.

I'd also post on webhostingtalk.com, lots of folk on there with experience Smile
