Interesting league table here valuing the worlds best brands.

Google tops the list with a brand worth $100bn

Interesting report, thanks, but awfully waffly. I couldn't be bothered till I got to the info on pages 8 and 9, but by then I was almost asleep.

Mind you, I didn't get off to a good start on it because my first thought was that it was a pity they didn't get a professional proofreader before publishing it. (My company offers a proofreading service. Twisted Evil )

From their introductory message:
Quote:
...Please accept this report with our complements...

I would go for 'compliment' also, but is it not one of those words that can be spelt either way?

No. They are homonyms.

From the OED:

complement: 1. a. something that completes b. one of a pair, or of two things that go together; 2. the full number needed to man a ship, fill a conveyance etc.; 3. a word or phrase added to a verb to complete the predicate of a sentence; 4. a group of proteins in the blood capable of lysing bacteria etc. ... and so on.

compliment: 1. a. a spoken or written expression of praise b. an act or circumstance implying praise; 2. a. formal greetings, especially as a written accompaniment to a gift etc. b. praise; ... and so on.

Ooooh, not heard of them before. I looked up 'homonyms' and got the impression that they had to be spelt the same but might have two or more meanings. Are they in fact homophones?

It's interesting how valuable china mobile's brand is, when Im guessing noone in Europe or America has anything to do with them. In contrast, CocaCola is known worldwide and yet has a similar brand value.
