Gee, I really hope this posting isn't going to be a spam magnet. I need a couple of very simple web pages translated from Mandarin to English. Where's the best place for finding someone?

Warning: this is not an invitation to spam this forum. I am simply looking for someone who can read/write Mandarin to translate a couple of pages for me. It's an easy job. As usual, spam will be deleted and spammers banned.

Little known fact... I have a distinction in Advanced Mandarin Chinese (taken as a subsidiary when I did my degree). Sadly, though, my knowledge is so minimal nowadays (in fact, it was back then) that I'm not in a position to help.

Have you tried somewhere like freelancer.net or peopleperhour.com ?

LOL! Perhaps it was an ill-judged idea. It's just that there seems to be so many Chinese people on here desperate to make money, even to the extent that they'll spam the forum. In a way I guess I was hoping that someone would hold up their hand and say "I can do that for you".

There's a couple of web pages which I need to read. There's a button at the top of the page saying "click here for the English version". When you click the button, you get a message saying "coming soon". Well, yeah, that's in English and I could understand that. But I need to know what the page in Mandarin says.

Or can Google Translate cope with it?

Laughing Laughing Laughing

Like I'd trust Google Translate to come out with anything sensible? We've had loads of fun with that sort of thing over the years.

A friend of ours wrote an article for us and had "a sly dig" at someone. The translator came back with "a cunning excavation". No, no, no. I just need someone who can understand Mandarin to tell me what the darned page says. Laughing

They've got a bit more sophisticated since then, thankfully (I think the translation Kay mentions came from Babelfish). I've just run "sly dig" through Google Translate into German and got "Seitenhieb", which it then rendered back as "side swipe". Evidently they've had time to build up a pretty extensive database of idioms by now.

Mind you, the best fun was to be had when translating between English and East Asian languages. We got some totally incomprehensible results when translating quite simple sentences into Japanese or Korean and back.

Hello, I dont know if you still require a mandarin speaker to translate your documents, however I am a fluent mandarin speaker (taken the highest level mandarin proficiency test 3 months ago in China). I have just got back from China where I was teaching at a university. If still needed please contact me anytime. Thanks.

Thanks. It seems such a long time ago I can't even remember what it was about, I do remember that I simply wanted to get some info from a page - along the lines of "Do they offer this service or don't they?".

If I ever find the URL again, I'll get in touch.

Meanwhile, why not go and introduce yourself on the Introductions forum? If you become a respected member it's quite likely that you'll make some good contacts and maybe even be able to pick up some work on here.
