Sitemaps seems a major area of neglect. A small survey showed, small and global marketing companies had no Google sitemap or in one case, it was last updated in 2008.

I'm moving this to the Web Marketing Forum as it doesn't appear to be a review request.

2 questions:

1. Is a sitemap essential for all sites?

2. Doesn't it go against the grain of what Google says elsewhere?

“Make pages for users, not for search engines.”
(Google Quality guidelines – basic principles #1)

Thanks for moving this to the Web Marketing Forum. It was a hard call where to make the post. As the Review Forum is well read, it might have prompted people to check before requesting a review.

As to your comments.

It would seem to make sense to provide an index of all the pages you would like to be listed in search engine results. I don't think this has anything to do with page contents.

Regards

But aren't you already doing this simply by creating an easily-crawlable site?

Sitemaps take no time to create so for me I don't see why you wouldn't have one.

I'm not saying you shouldn't, just playing devil's advocate really. I do think it's a valid point about Google making sites for users and not search engines. They do kind of contradict themselves there by suggesting you make a sitemap for them.

I don't see a contradiction there, Paul. With the sitemap, you're just making sure Google gets to see and index all the pages you made for your human visitors.

I agree, Drachsi. Not many people see the importance of this let alone know what a sitemap is. Which is one reason why people like you and I are in business. Wink
