The most profitable ones will be those that you have the greatest interest in (ie. those that you will persevere with...)

Try the Google AdWords tool to find profitable niches.

If you don't have a real interest in your subject and can write well about it, it's unlikely that you'll ever make anything of it.

You need to care about what you do. Writing crap won't get you anywhere.

I think I got this list from TechCrunch but if you're planning to monetize via Adsense, here are the top 20 topics with the most expensive Adwords keywords:

1. Insurance (example keyword: “auto insurance price quotes”)
2. Loans (example keyword: “consolidate graduate student loans”)
3. Mortgage (example keyword: “refinanced second mortgages”)
4. Attorney (example keyword: “personal injury attorney”)
5. Credit (example keyword: “home equity line of credit”)
6. Lawyer
7. Donate
8. Degree
9. Hosting
10. Claim
11. Conference Call
12. Trading
13. Software
14. Recovery
15. Transfer
16. Gas/Electricity
17. Classes
18. Rehab
19. Treatment
20. Cord Blood

Personally, I wouldn't select a website or ebusiness concept based upon profitability alone. There are countless topics that are very lucrative - BUT - your site will never make a dime because they are too competitive.

The more profitable the topic, the more vested interest the competition (including those with deep pockets) have to out rank and out-produce you. It is possible to kick some bootie on the Net by worker harder and smarter, but you must start out on the right foot.

Also, if you choose all your keywords based on Adsense, Google will figure it out and give you a hard time.

Besides looking at $$, I would make sure I choose a topic I at least had interest in. I would research the keywords on the subject and find out what people were looking for (demand). Then I would make sure there was enough demand to support a business and not too much competition to make it impossible to get anywhere.

I would examine several concepts and not just one. I would then compare the concepts, researching monetization options for each and choose the one with the best balance of demand, winnable competition and monetization capabilities. Then roll up my sleeves, because the days are gone that any niche is easy to win.

Best Regards

Denise
