In case like me you suddenly found that the Wordpress admin edit posts box had gone all blank / empty, you're certainly not alone.

This is a known problem which is caused by PHP 5.4 and the changes to htmlspecialchars() function. If anything in your previously perfectly good post is not strictly covered by UTF-8 then you'll suddenly find the box is blank, and worse still if you "update" you'll end up with a blank post.

So what's the solution? You can either:

1) Wait until Wordpress v3.6 which should fix this.
2) Don't upgrade to PHP 5.4 (might be out of your hands).

3) If you're a programmer or feeling brave, edit one of the scripts:

- The file is /wp-includes/formatting.php
- Around line 2480 look for "wp_richedit_pre($text)"
- Change the lines just below that:

Code:
$output = htmlspecialchars($output, ENT_NOQUOTES);

Code:
$output = htmlspecialchars($output, ENT_NOQUOTES, get_option( 'blog_charset' ));

- Slightly further down, look for "wp_htmledit_pre($output)"
- Edit the lines just below that to -> from:

Code:
$output = htmlspecialchars($output, ENT_NOQUOTES);

Code:
$output = htmlspecialchars($output, ENT_NOQUOTES, get_option( 'blog_charset' ));

- Reupload the file and then reload the post edit page, and it should return to normal.
- If it doesn't then you might have a dodgy setting for 'blog_charset' which you might need to edit the database for.
