Further to Kay's post in another thread (here), we thought we'd have a little challenge for any Aardvark members who wish to participate.

First person to get a mention of any of their sites on any of these newspapers' online versions (Times, Telegraph, Guardian or Independent) - with a link - wins 100 ants. It's designed to be just a bit of fun - tricks such as buying links, or appearing via Google AdSense, or anything else which Aaron rules as 'underhand' will be dismissed. The aardvark's decision is final. Razz

Feel free to use this thread to share what you are doing (you may wish to maintain a degree of secrecy initially! Twisted Evil ), or add any further comments.

The competition starts... NOW! Very Happy

Let's up the stakes and make it 200 then.

I'm IN!

First thing I'm going to do is to look at my sadly neglected Twitter account (bluergh) and LinkedIn account and see who I can pull on board to help me.

Arghh, I just gave away my tactics, but I have other things in my arsenal.

Adi - 100 ants does seem a bit miserly. But if you win, you also get the prize of a mention in the major broadsheets. Smile

Actually I probably can't be bothered with my first suggestion. I'll go down my own path. Peace and goodwill to all.

Exactly... that's the main prize. Cool

Some of us are abstaining from lewd behaviour and getting down to the task at hand. Wink

One of my freelance writers doesn't do as much work for me as he once did, because... he got a job at The Times. Laughing

I've sent him an email pointing out that I want to win this competition, and he's emailed back with:

You already got one [a mention, referring to UKattraction.com] 2 years ago, stop being greedy!

What site do you want to promote? I can send a link to travel and put in a
word - they might mention you!

The race is on! Twisted Evil

Well stuff you, Paul. I'll stop hanging around and messing about on here and get down to the challenge. Laughing

You should see the cleavage on Paul too. Certainly opens some doors.

I forgot about this for a couple of days. I got distracted by Si's postings. Laughing

I tweeted saying I needed help with the challenge and a couple of people kindly retweeted it, but no bites so far. And a couple of minutes ago I sent a message via LinkedIn to one of my contacts. (He's the one who wrote about my TrashedHouse site for the Guardian business section.)

I'm thinking there's (at least) two ways to approach this.

- do something newsworthy or create some news to get mentioned in the newspaper

- collaborate on some kind of business or travel feature so your site gets a mention as part of an overall analytical piece

How's everyone else getting on?

I've got nowhere as yet. Time to chase my contact. Wink

I think I might also need to try some other methods... hmmmm.... Smile

Thanks for the link. The key point seems to come to the end, so to cut to the chase for anyone that doesn't want to read it all, it summises:

The way I see it, if you want to break out of the blogosphere into the mainstream media you’re going to have a big exclusive ahead of the game.

Quote:
The way I see it, if you want to break out of the blogosphere into the mainstream media you’re going to have a big exclusive ahead of the game. Look for a topic that is generating column inches and poke it at from every angle until it breaks. Even then unless you have reach and influential connections it’s unlikely to get outside the usual readership you have – so when you’re thinking about where to break your story, look for individuals or sites with a pre-existing reputation and audience.

Sounds like reasonable advice. However, I think there are plenty of other ways in which coverage could be obtained... I'm just not sure how yet, though. Smile
