Groupon Inc., owner of a daily coupon website with 20 million subscribers, is seeking venture funding that may value the company at about $3 billion, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The company aims to raise the funding to help it expand beyond the 230 markets where it now operates, said the people, who declined to be identified because the fundraising is private. The company had been discussing funding that would value it in the range of $2 billion to $3 billion, two of the people said.

I can't think of many large companies whose values have more than doubled in the last 6 months.

See earlier article (April) from Techcrunch.

Guys
Would really value your thoughts on how effective you think Groupon is

They recently pitched to a group I'm associated with and I've included it in a short presentation on methods to market a national chain of pubs / restaurants
Cheers

I've heard mixed reviews. The general consensus seems to be that you do get a massive boost in sales. For some that translates into a boost in regular custom, for some it translates into a short-term splurge in unprofitable custom that doesn't help longer term growth.

Evidently, they think $6bn is not enough...

It is a pretty strong valuation. Hats off to them though, they've stumbled across a decent business model.
