As something of an old-timer when it comes to the internet, I get the feeling that spam is getting worse rather than better. You'd hope that, with time, enough people would realise that posting cr*p on forums, adding meaningless comments on blogs, and so and so forth, people would eventually realise that it's just not working.

But I get the feeling that the opposite is true and that spam is growing at an even faster rate than it once did. You only have to be a forum moderator to see that in some cases more than half the stuff posted is often spam.

I don't suppose we can ever hope that spam will go away, but can we realistically expect it to one day decline as more and more people realise it's not the way to do business?

Or am I living in cloud cuckoo land? Embarassed

I suspect people are turning more to social media spam because email spam is increasingly futile. Filters now are really pretty good at removing the crap from your inbox, so spammers have to find other ways.

i sense there's intentional spam like the people who send automated messages to this forum and flood peoples inboxes with Viagra emails
then there's unintentional - "have a big list of emails, send a message about my product to absolutely everyone"

feels like the latter can be more prevalent in the social media environment

The cost of sending spam is marginal when it's automated, so if the spammer can even get a minute percentage of conversions from their millions of spams, then they may still perceive it as worthwhile for them.

They don't give a stuff about forum or blog owners or email recipients. They don't care that they can cost us hours of our time deleting their cr@p. I don't see any likely improvement any time soon.

Then there's also the link building spammers - real people getting paid a pittance by stupid or unscrupulous clients to build backlinks for them.

It would be nice to come up with a solution for this problem, but in this modern world of globaliisation I expect the scum will always find somewhere to hide.

I think it is always going to be impossible to not have spam. I think it will just get worse. As programmers work hard to find ways to filter spam, equally as clever and unethical programmers are working to create software which aids spamming.

It is the same as the sales people who keep knocking on my door every day to try and sell me something. Seems almost daily now. Didn't used to happen so much.
