I read that bookmarking is still a worthwile activity in relation to SEO or at least as a part of SEO strategy.

If this is so why? This method is as open to abuse as spammy articles in directories and possibly more so.

That said, if it worth doing how much how often and where etc?

Where did you read this, Bill...?

I wouldn't have thought it was all that important, if at all...

Google have introduced social into their signals as part of the ranking algo. but that is on a trust rank basis and not on a mickey mouse style spammy bookmarking basis.

it ALL depends on the value of the attached social status of the link. The other day, I got a link from an industry leader in SEO, that person is followed by many other industry leaders, so that link had a high worth in the ranking. At the same time i got loads of lesser links from the same site, but from people who have no social standing 9as such online in this particular sense), those links probably didn't mean much as a stand alone, BUT, because the industry leaders had linked to the same page at roughly the same point in time, those lesser links will count, and my page will have got a boost in both value of content and the new timeline (event) element of the algorithm,

This is why it is important to network properly online if you wish to make best use.

I can't put my finger on it but it was a couple of SEO articles one of which suggested bookmarks had remained as valuable as ever since Panda, whilst article marketing had plummeted in link value.

It doesn't seem right to me. I think directories and bookmarks are just different versions of the same dodgy game.

It is. Just got a few pages that went live on a new site Im working on. Bookmarked it using old trusted accounts in two places - Digg and StumbleUpon. Minimal traffic but the pages got to second page for their respective keywords within a few hours. I don't do much self-serving bookmarking these days but it's still an important tool if you want your pages indexed fast.

Depends entirely on how it's used and what you want to achieve. I gain tremendous value from it, because I have spent time getting networks of people together, so I can learn from what they are interested in, and I can let them know what I find useful. Then with something like Diigo there are various different discussion groups to get involved with. Very useful.
