Want to increase newspaper sales by 50,000 papers a day to impress advertisers? Just lie about the numbers. What could go wrong?

Lies seem to be a mundane event these days. Everybody's at it.

I don't believe anything I read in the papers any more.

(I thought by the post title you were offering us a franchise on a paper stall! Very Happy )

Would you be able to lie about the number of your website/newsletter's users and get away with it? Do advertisers carry out an audit before doing a sponsorship?

Thanks

I know all about newspapers having been there myself. Rolling Eyes

There are terms that you have to be wary of.
circulation = the number of compies printed
distribution = the number of copies that go through the door of the printers.
readership = (this is the peach of the bunch) it is estimated that a newspaper is read by 2.4 people so the readership will often be worked out by average print run, minus average unslod returns multiplied by 2.4.

so 100,000 printed, 10,000 returned, = redership of 225,000 crooked or what?

We had something called VFD which is an independent audited system called verified free delivery. They back checked (by telephone) the areas we said we delivered to You had to get a 96% confirmation of delivery over 6 months to qualify, and it was bloody hard work, but we got it.

We had a print run of 180,000 per week. and we CLEARLY broke this down into areas, and unfortunately we had to also issue readership figures, as that was what our competitors were selling on.

As my dad used to say

"the only thing you can believe in in the newspapers is fish and chips"

Ok You asked,Smile

When I was 9 my parents had a baby, (my sister) problem was my parents were alcoholics, so muggins here got left looking after my sis.

There was no food in the house, the electricity was cut off, so it was a bit dire. I went out and knocked doors asking people on the setate where I lived if they would like to have the evening paper delivered rather than collect it rom the shop. I charged one penny per night. long story short, I ended up making enough a week to have the electric put back on, and to feeed and cloth myself and my kid sister. God bless my alcoholic parents, had it not been for them I would never have learned how to sell.
